You’ve picked your location. You’ve narrowed down your dates. But the when—as in time of day—can make or break the look and feel of your photos.
Whether you’re planning a senior session, engagement, or updated family portraits, here’s what to know about choosing the best time of day for your shoot.
🌅 Golden Hour: A Photographer’s Dream
Golden hour (that dreamy time just after sunrise or just before sunset) gives your photos that warm, glowy, ethereal light. Shadows are soft, colors are rich, and everything just looks more magical.

☀️ Midday: Bright, Bold, and Tricky
High noon light is strong and direct, which can be a little harsh on skin tones and cause squinty eyes. That said, it can totally work in shaded spots, wooded trails, or overcast days.

🌤️ Morning Light: Cool and Calm
Early morning light is soft and more neutral in tone, great for avoiding crowds and beating the heat—especially during summer sessions.

💡 What I Recommend
If you’re not sure what light fits your session, don’t stress. When you book with me, I’ll help you decide based on your location, comfort level, and desired vibe.
Want those golden tones? We’ll shoot close to sunset. Prefer soft and neutral? Let’s aim for morning. Want your toddler at their happiest? We’ll work around nap schedules too. 😉
🎯 Bottom Line
Light affects everything—from the color of your outfit to the mood of the images. And when in doubt, I’ve got your back (and your best angles).

With love,
